Department of General Surgery
The Department of General Surgery at Indira Medical College & Hospitals (IMCH) is a centre of excellence dedicated to comprehensive surgical care, academic advancement, and high-quality training. The department provides a broad range of general surgical procedures along with advanced and specialty surgical services, ensuring holistic care for both elective and emergency patients.
The scope of services includes general surgical procedures, upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, breast surgery, thyroid and endocrine surgery, soft tissue surgery, trauma and emergency surgery, and minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures. The department manages a high surgical workload, offering residents and students extensive clinical exposure and hands-on operative experience.
The department is supported by state-of-the-art operation theatres, endoscopy units, intensive care facilities, and round-the-clock emergency services, ensuring safe, efficient, and evidence-based surgical care. Academic activities are conducted through structured undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs, including bedside clinics, operative demonstrations, seminars, journal clubs, and morbidity and mortality meetings.
In addition to clinical and academic excellence, the department actively engages in community outreach and preventive health initiatives, notably Pink October breast cancer awareness programs, hospital-based awareness activities, and public outreach campaigns aimed at early detection and public education.
MS General Surgery (Postgraduate Programme)
The MS General Surgery programme at Indira Medical College & Hospital (IMCH) is a three-year postgraduate residency course, approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) with an annual intake of four postgraduate seats. The programme is structured to train residents into competent, confident, and ethically responsible surgeons, capable of independent practice and advanced academic pursuits.
Residents receive comprehensive training in general surgical procedures and specialty surgical disciplines, with progressive operative responsibility under close faculty supervision. The programme emphasizes emergency and trauma care, perioperative management, critical care exposure, and evidence-based clinical decision-making.
The academic framework includes regular seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, morbidity and mortality meetings, interdepartmental teaching sessions, research methodology training, and mandatory dissertation work, in strict adherence to NMC guidelines. Continuous assessment through internal evaluations and structured examinations ensures sustained academic and clinical growth.
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates are well prepared for independent surgical practice, super-specialty training, academic careers, and leadership roles in healthcare, reflecting IMCH’s commitment to excellence in postgraduate surgical education.
